Has the time come for the tuna to be protected as an endangered species?
This is what Sergi Tudela responsible for fishery matters in WWF Mediterranean, seems to be supporting. The reason is found in overfishing of the species from fishing fleets of the Mediterranean and mostly by not following fishing regulations and quantity measures set by the European Union.
According to the log of the French Navy, that records findings from 24 surprise searches on fishing fleets of the Mediterranean countries that fish this species:
- A great number of professional fishermen (especially in Turkey) does not follow international regulations concerning tuna fishing.
- The quantities caught are way above the limits allowed.
- The size of the fish being caught is smaller than allowed.
- There are no local authorities on the boats to record and apply the regulations.

Moreover in report of French Navy, which records the discoveries from 24 unforeseen controls in the piscatorial fleets of countries of Mediterranean that deal with their fishery of concrete type (Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus) are revealed the followings:
• Big number from the professional fishermen does not follow the international regulations on the fishery of tone.
• The quantities that are fished are above the allowed quantities
• Smaller fish sizes than those allowed
• Not existence of local observers in the piscatorial tools for the recording and observation of regulations.
